Save for the rustling of dead leaves pushed along by the fall breeze, the streets remained quiet and empty, where only recently they had been filled with life and laughter.
Scraps of polyester costume drifted among the leaves, adding a splash of brighter color to the drab oranges and browns. Of all the hues, it was red that shone the brightest.
Splashes of crimson coated the front of the cookie cutter homes along the street and also on the faces of the pumpkins on the porches. They all wore the same smile, like the fat cat that got the cream.

Demon, man-eating pumpkins!
