The things that came from below arrived hungry. They tore through our crops, and when they ran out, they started on the people.
At first, they seemed impossible to kill, attacking under the cover of night and impervious to weapons. We soon found out, though, that light was their enemy.
In the ravaged farmers’ fields, we hastily constructed lighthouses powered by the heat of the daytime sun. When the things emerged from their burrows, it triggered the lights, turning the invaders to dust.
Everything seemed to be going well, until they learned to evolve. The light is now their friend.




Thanks to Stephen King and other writers, cornfields have become the terrifying backdrop (and hidey hole) for evil and monsters. Love it!
