In the lead up to Halloween, I am going to put together a series of posts dedicated to different genres of horror. I may also do a top 10 of my favorite movies, which will include a mixture of well-known movies and smaller releases that you may not have seen. For now, I am going to get things rolling with books set in haunted houses. With these, I am going to try to avoid the obvious choices and go with lesser-known titles. With that said, let’s see which creepy houses made the top 5 on this list…
The House of Long Shadows by Ambrose Ibsen
The concept of this one is absolutely fantastic. We have an internet famous handyman looking to renovate an old house in 30 days. The ultimate goal is to land a network show on TV, but the house he chooses offers more than simple renovation issues, including a creepy trespasser who keeps showing up in the videos.
The Haunting of Ashburn House by Darcy Coates
Coates is one of the more prolific indie authors in the business, but quality is not sacrificed for quantity. In Ashburn House, we have a young woman inheriting an old mansion that seems find by day, but which casts long, creepy shadows by night.
When a beautiful old house in a stunning location goes on the market for a steal of a price, how could you possibly pass up the deal? The house, though, has secrets hidden within the walls, and with teenagers mysteriously going missing in the vicinity, it is clear that not all is right with Wild Fell.
The House on Abigail Lane by Kealan Patrick Burke
Imagine a normal looking house from the outside, but one that has a strange history indoors. For years, anyone who ventures upstairs in the property goes missing, with each on leaving behind something to add to the mystery. What is going on upstairs in Abigail Lane?
The House of Lost Souls by FG Cottam
Four students visit a derelict home, and while they all make it out alive, within weeks of the visit one has killed themself, while the other three are slowly going insane. The brother of one of the students return to the house to look for clues that might save her. What he finds might lead him to the same fate.
I hope you guys like these picks. I’ll be back in a couple of days with a new sub-genre. If there is one in particular you’d like me to explore, please do let me know.
