I read this book, years ago, and agree with your assessment. It's a little too long for me, especially the first part, where it became clear it was only going to end one of two ways (die or escape). That might be because I've seen that scenario before. The second part felt more unpredictable to me.
Nacker was a great character in the worst way.
He was probably the highlight of the book for me.
I was fond of the smoking woman.
The house and its inhabitants are haunting and horrible. I do agree, the second half wasn't in sync with the terror of the first part.

Yup. Even when Nevill isn’t fully at his best, he is still near the top of the horror heap for me.

Last Days is my favorite. So damn creepy.
