It has long been said that you should never judge a book by its cover, and that is very much the case with The Eyes Have Ears by Mike Garcia. Looking at the cover, you might imagine a whimsical little tale in the vein of Goosebumps, but this story is much deeper and is also so very well written.
This book is one that you are easily going to be able to inhale in a single sitting, as it clocks in at around 85 pages, with another 20 going to a bonus story at the end that you also should not miss.
It is the writing that elevates this book to an astoundingly high level, but there is also something totally alien and uncomfortable about the descriptions of fields of corn that have eyes. The fields are expanding and taking everything in their wake, including the residents of the small, hot, and dusty little farm town. You can feel the heat and can also breathe in the fumes given off by the cornstalks of terror.
There is no major build up here, as the story basically begins with the eyes already showing within the corn. You don’t ever feel the need to know how it all began, and while the story is short, the characters feel lived in and relatable.
The Eyes Have Ears is listed as the first in a series of books called “Garcia After Dark.” I cannot wait to read whatever might be coming next.
