I'm struggling with how I want to publish my next book. I want the validation of a publisher taking a chance on me and paying for all the typesetting and artwork, but I also enjoy the process and control of doing it myself. I have some stuff on KDP but it's a wasteland. Nice logo BTW.

Yeah. I want to see what it feels like to be in total control of the process from start to finish.

I love typesetting and book layout. I did my first book in Word with a cover in Photoshop, which was a lot of work and looked awful but I was still proud of it. I've got Atticus now and use Canva for covers but considering investing in Vellum. It's the cost though that's got me down: illustrator, proof reader, maybe an editor (though I'm supposed to be one of those but a second pair of eyes is useful), and the $250 Vellum price tag, but it would be immensely satisfying, even if I never sold a single copy 😂

Wow, I didn't realize what a huge cut Amazon would be taking from my .99 cent Sci-fi novel that came out last October. I haven't gotten my first royalty statement from my publisher yet, but I'll be setting my expectations more realistically now.

I went from trad to self published and I much prefer the control. You have to work harder of course, but there is a lotore satisfaction in it.

I’m looking forward to putting in the work.

They only take 30% for me at .99! I still get very little, but I'm not sure where else to sell them with a free ISBN. I do want to back away from Amazon, but I always figured it was a necessary evil to deal with them.

good for you, for me Amazon is a necesary evil at the time until I find a real publisher. The amount Amazon KDP is crazy

It could end up being a disaster, but if I fail, it will at least be on my own terms.

Horror Hangouts's avatar

that is the most important thing to be truly independent and doing things on your terms

It is disheartening to hear the Amazon and publishing %s - no matter if they seemed fair at the time or not, it is your work that they market. I wish you all the luck to reclaim your profits!

I love this bold direction (easy for me to say, no skin in this game), and the new logo concept is great. Good luck and keep us updated.

Thank you. At some point you need to take a risk and invest in yourself.

With your backlist, do you find that horror readers follow authors across platforms more readily than other genres? Wondering if the community aspect of horror fandom makes direct sales more viable than it might be elsewhere.

Best of luck. Doing a serial novel here has really helped me build some momentum.
