Lee Cronin uses a similar 'through the peephole' technique in The Mummy as well, except it's through a cracked open door. It has the same errie detached effect on the viewer as well. As if we are watching something we're not supposed to be watching.
Whoa. The mum-as-monster angle hits so much harder when you've got kids of your own. That elevator scene had me gripping the couch cushion like it owed me money. I reckon you're bang on about the building acting as its own character too.
