Finally! I got myself into trouble a couple weeks back defending the guys initial wish. It gets framed in so many reviews like it was awful and he's a terrible person for thinking he deserves it and is owed love.
I was like ummm... Who hasn't at some point or another wished for love? Or anything for that matter? We never believe the wish will come true.
But for this movie it's usually getting framed in the language of he wished to steal her bodily autonomy or toxic masculinity.
I also clarified I wasn't making excuses for bad choices he made after the fact, just the wish.
Anyway, so nice to see an actual review that acknowledges the wish itself was innocent enough 😃
Exactly, I felt that the true villain in this story was the "corporate entity" that made the little wooden trinket in the first place. Whenever someone reduces this to "toxic masculinity" or the "erasure of female bodily autonomy", I just zone out. "Toxic masculinity" is just lazy thought to me anymore. Bear's best friend was FAR MORE toxic than he was.
Finally saw it today! My daughter insisted, while more sensitive manners of the family were still asleep, we watch it together (she had already seen it once). Wow, what an experience! It was so well done, and so incredibly intense. And the acting was brilliant. Did I like it? It was very good, but i don't think I'd watch it, again. I can only take so much brutal insanity. 😅
This for me, makes Obsession another great entry into what is becoming a fantastic era in horror movies.
I agree. ☝️ I loved the scene with the taped door (or whatever it was) and him trying to get out by pulling and pushing... That was unexpected and freaked me out.
