Whoa. I love how you've made the childhood illness feel almost sympathetic before twisting it into something monstrous. That gruel scene is grim indeed, but so clever as a plot-hinge point. Elizabeth already sounds like someone who's been taught that pain equals power. Such a properly unsettling foundation to build a monster on. Thanks for writing this!
