The Not So Beautiful Blue
A trio of horror drabbles
The Cottage
Once thought of as inhospitable, impossible to navigate, land, hikers now came. Paths quickly formed, each one leading to a peak where a cozy cottage sat, a blue light always burning in the window.
Most felt compelled to leave, but when the weather moved in, other chose to stay. All were welcomed by the old couple making residence in the cottage. Hearty soup and a warm bed were always avaialble.
People left changed, although not in the way you would expect. They felt connected to the place, and to the ship, just out of sight, that dropped the elderly beings.
Secrets
Scientists speak of the ocean blue and of how the depths are an undiscovered country stranger than the cosmos. After all, it is easy to fear what we cannot see.
While the belief is that the mysterious lies in the darkest depths, the truth is that what can hurt us lurks beneath the sand and silt of the shallowest spaces.
The giants that live there are biding their time, waiting for the population of Earth to grow to a point when the harvest will be bountiful. That day is coming soon, and when they rise, we will all soon perish.
Skyfall
The sky didn’t so much fall as expand downward, painting the world in a permanent shade of darkest blue. The world was reduced to the shadows of almost night, but things remained mostly the same.
Humans adjusted to the new sense of normal, but when the surface cracks began to show, fear set in. Some believed that the beautiful blue was a warning, others thought it the first in a series of events.
The latter didn’t feel vindicated when things started emerging from the ground. There is no victory to be found on the eve of a fight for life.
