SYNOPSIS -
Amid a series of disappearances along Highway 50, lonely middle-aged truck driver Hank's pitstop at a remote and rundown motel turns sideways when he's beaten unconscious. Coming around, Hank finds himself trapped inside a dank basement, but he is not alone.
Silence in the Basement is a grim and unflinching exploration of free will, and a journey into the dark hearts of men—one who will mine the worst depths of depravity to exert his willpower, and another driven by a simple desire for survival.
REVIEW -
Sometimes, it takes a moment of personal horror for you to realize that life is indeed worth living, even when you've spent a long time feeling otherwise. That is the story for the main character in Alex Mura's Silence in the Basement.
Truck driver, Hank Grimes, has had heartbreak in his past and is barely holding on, struggling to pay the bills while mourning the loss of his family. He is forced to fight for survival when a check-in to a seedy motel turns into a nightmare.
Silence in the Basement is a bleak horror novel that is both violent and unflinching. It feels claustrophobic at times, given the setting, and is very well written by Mura. This is a graphic one, though, so you have been warned.
