3 More Deadly Drabbles - Death is Here
Three more 100-word short tales of terror
The Whistle
I have always found the sound of a train whistle at night to be terrifying. Perhaps it is because it sounds out of place in the silence. It comes like a scream of terror from someone suffering some unimaginable fate at the hands of an awful assailant.
Perhaps it is because it sounds so loud. That scream tears through the darkness like ragged nails through flesh, cutting to the core to find what delicacies lie within the human body.
Perhaps it is because I live nowhere near a railway line.
Cotton Candy
The lights of the fair swirl around me, dazzlingly bright, as I struggle to catch a breath. The sweetness of the cotton candy has been replaced by the bitter taste of fear.
The first few pulls on the tangled sugar were as delicious as always, but something black appeared amongst the pink. A long strand of black hair that seems to have no end.
As the world spins around me, I see the cotton candy vendor grinning at me as he motions like an angler hauling in a catch. I feel myself inexorably pulled toward him as I drift through the crowd to what is surely my impending brutal death.
Last Man Standing
I awake in my hospital bed to nothingness. The usual hustle and bustle of the ward have been set on mute, and everyone appears to have left this place.
I can vaguely remember the crash, the ambulance trip, and the moments of light in among the darkness. They feel like dreams now, and so I stand, ready to approach the blazing light that beckons from my room door.
As I draw closer, the light begins to shift, with streaks of red snaking inside. I also feel the heat and know that I have been judged for all my life’s misdeeds.
