A Sprinkle of Small Town Magic
Something weird happened in the pizzeria
Something a little strange happened today on a trip that my wife and I took. We love to head out and explore small towns, but while the spot we landed today didn’t really fit the bill, it did provide something of a strange moment.
We made the trek to Woodstock, GA, with the drive taking twice as long as expected due to the ridiculous Atlanta traffic. The place itself was more of a city vibe with a main street filled to brimming with different restaurants. We stopped in at Reformation Brewery and tried to figure out where we should chow down.
We ended up settling on a pizza joint called Fire and Stone. The restaurant was located inside an old train station right on the tracks and was a really cool spot. At one point, a train rumbled past and the whole place shook, which was when things started to get weird.
The place had a really cool vibe, playing old school music by crooners like Engelbert Humperdinck and Louis Prima. My gaze drifted to the bar, and I imagined my dad sitting there. These were the songs he played all the time, and I know he would have loved to sit at that bar, drinking and singing along.
Just as I was thinking about that, the left side of my nose essentially exploded and started bleeding, much like Eleven out of Stranger Things, or maybe it was the fucking Shining. Either way, the sight of the blood kinda killed the moment as I shuffled off to the bathroom to clean off my beard. It’s mostly grey and at that point looked like I had just eaten roadkill.
It was not the best trip we have ever taken, but that little moment made it a wee bit special. Let’s be honest, any time spent beside the woman you love, even if it is mostly stuck in traffic, is a great day.

Is your nose okay now?
I wish we lived in a place where we could find interesting small towns on a road trip. I mean... we have small towns that you can drive to, but—with only a few exceptions—most of them are not that interesting.
Okay, so two things: 1) Stranger Things was shot mostly in Jackson, and I want to get down there to check it out. It’s like 20 minutes from Locust Grove. 2) I’m from Asheville, NC, and I’d love to show y’all around my mountains at some point, if you decide to go leaf-peeping or something.
