Flash Fiction Friday - An Unwelcome Guest

Who's that knocking on the door?

THUMP!! THUMP!! THUMP!!

Bill and Sarah both jumped, the contents of their popcorn bowl tumbling onto the floor.

“Who the Hell can that be at this hour?” Bill pondered, checking his watch and seeing that it was almost midnight.

Sarah pulled the blanket up to her chin, as though the soft, wooly fabric would somehow protect her from whomever, or whatever, was hammering on their front door. “Just ignore it,” she whimpered.

THUMP!! THUMP!! THUMP!!

“This is ridiculous,” Bill mumbled, pulling out his phone and opening the security app that showed a view of their front porch. “It’s a woman,” he said showing the image to his wife.

“She looks scared,” Sarah said, biting her bottom lip.

“What should I do?”

With a shrug, Sarah slipped even further under the blanket, wishing their unwelcome visitor away.

Bill walked over to the front door and called out “Who’s there?” As he waited for a response, he checked the security app again, just in time to see the woman looking down the street, an expression of terror on here face.

“He’s coming for me. You need to let me in,” she begged, her voice sounding somewhat muffled behind the thick oak door.

“Um, I can call the police,” Bill responded.

“ARE YOU FUCKING STUPID? LET…ME…IN.”

Bill reached for the lock, but he paused midway, his mind drifting off to the horror movies that he and Sarah always watched. He imagined their current situations as one of two things: it was a vampire seeking permission to get inside, after which she would leech them both dry of their blood, or the woman was a setup for them to open the door so that her posse of madmen could get inside and ransack the property. “I’m calling the police,” he finally said.

“They won’t get here in time.” The male voice with a distinctly Eastern European accent drifted in from outside, the sound making Bill feel woozy.

He checked the security camera one more time and let out a gasp as he saw a man gnawing at the strange woman’s throat.

The thing looked directly into the camera and smiled. “I am still hungry. Could you please let me in?”

Bill felt a feeling of warmth spread through his body, bringing with it a pleasant hum inside his head. He smiled and reached to unlock the door.
