One of my faves is Llarona... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Llorona

And I agree, those Japanese folklore monsters are terrifying!

I combine La Llorona lore with White Lady folklore in my serial, Maryann!

I need to catch up on it. Read the first 2 chapters and loved them

La Llarona is definitely creepy.

I like the contrast here — leaning into something romantic before sliding into the unsettling bits makes it hit a little harder.

The Blue Boy detail is great too. Hearing something before seeing it is always worse somehow. The mind fills in things you almost wish it wouldn’t.

Such sharp teeth is great, I love Harrison’s work and would recommend her novel Black Sheep.

There was a spooky Goonies-esque film about a bunyip back in the 80s called Frog Dreaming/The Quest. It was an Australian film but had Henry Thomas post his ET fane. I'd completely forgotten about it until I read about bunyips here. It was great! The Ratman sounds terrifying.

Oooh, that’s cool.

Thanks for sharing these! Japan by far has the creepiest urban legends!
